Let's Accept that TOGAF-certified architects are trained to operate under CIOs and not CEOs

Updated: Mar 16

If you asked 100 CEOs what "Enterprise Architecture" (EA) should accomplish, nearly all of them would say something like, "It should shape our strategy, structure our operations, and seamlessly integrate our functions."

But look carefully at how TOGAF-certified architects typically operate. How many actively influence enterprise strategy? Almost none.

This leads to a critical question: If TOGAF doesn’t shape business strategy, why call it "Enterprise Architecture" at all?

1. The Reality of TOGAF’s Limited Strategic Influence

TOGAF positions itself as "Enterprise Architecture," implying strategic, enterprise-wide influence. However, consider reality:

  1. Do TOGAF-certified architects actively participate in strategic product launches? Rarely.

  2. Do CFOs depend on TOGAF for strategic financial decisions or risk modeling? Practically never.

  3. How many CHROs trust TOGAF-certified architects with workforce strategy or organizational culture? Virtually zero.
